The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, and the Michigan in Washington Program at the University of Michigan invite applications for a Lecturer I position at 33.33% effort for the Fall Term 2024. This appointment is scheduled to begin on 8/26 and end on 12/31.

Duties of these lecturer positions are expected to include teaching, developing course materials, evaluating and grading students, and holding regularly scheduled office hours. A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a lecturer in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three courses per semester.  Full-time and part-time positions are available.

Course Title(s): National Capital Research Seminar

Course Objectives:

  • Introduce main tools of social science research methods.
  • Learn to ask and answer critical questions about the world.
  • Understand the logic and significance of evidence-based research for policy recommendations and decision-making.
  • Formulate researchable questions and identify reliable data and relevant sources.
  • Develop skills in producing a robust literature review.
  • Utilize case studies and stakeholder analysis effectively.
  • Interpret statistical findings and visualize data.
  • Apply research skills to create a professional policy brief with real-world significance.
  • Strengthen research competence and confidence for various career paths.

The candidate must have reached candidacy in political science at the University of Michigan. The candidate must have demonstrated excellence in college-level teaching in the United States. The candidate must reside in Washington, D.C., and be able to instruct in person. Instructor must be familiar with the Michigan in Washington program.

The selection criteria used for this search are based on how the applicant's education and experience meet the required minimum qualifications for the position. Excellence in teaching and instruction will be the principal criteria used to select the successful candidate.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience instructing University of Michigan undergraduate students in the Washington, D.C. area.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
